# Multilingual Websites with Drupal: The Guide

Drupal is the leading open-source CMS for multilingual websites.
Content, menus, URLs, taxonomies, and interface texts are natively
translatable, without plugins or workarounds. arocom has been
implementing multilingual Drupal platforms since 2012 and integrates
translation services like TMGMT, Lingotek, or manual workflows.

## Multilingual Websites with Drupal: The Complete Guide

International organizations need websites in multiple languages.
What is a plugin problem in other CMS systems, Drupal solves in
the core. Multilingual support is not an extension; it is a
core feature.

## Drupal's Language Modules in the Core

Drupal includes four language modules in the core:

**Language.** Manages the available languages and language
detection (URL, browser, cookie, IP).

**Content Translation.** Translates content (nodes, taxonomies,
blocks) field by field. Each language has its own version
of the content.

**Configuration Translation.** Translates configurations such
as site names, menu entries, Views labels, and field labels.

**Interface Translation.** Translates the user interface:
buttons, error messages, and system texts.

## URL Strategy for Multilingual Websites

Drupal supports three URL strategies:

**Path prefix.** example.com/de/about-us and example.com/en/about.
The most common approach for websites with a single domain.

**Domain-based.** example.de and example.com. Each language
has its own domain. Useful for strongly localized presences.

**Session/Cookie.** The language is detected via the browser or
a cookie. Not recommended for SEO, as search engines do not
send cookies.

For SEO, the path prefix approach with hreflang tags is the
most robust solution. Drupal generates hreflang tags
automatically for all translated content.

## Translation Workflows

**Manual.** Editors translate directly in Drupal's interface.
For small websites with few languages, this is the simplest
approach.

**TMGMT.** The Translation Management Tool module connects
Drupal with professional translation services. Content is
sent to translation agencies with one click and automatically
imported upon completion.

**AI-assisted.** Translation APIs like DeepL or Google
Translate can be integrated via modules. Machine
pre-translation with subsequent review by editors saves
time at acceptable quality.

## Planning a Multilingual Platform?

arocom implements multilingual Drupal platforms with 2 to 20+
languages. The [Future Check](https://www.arocom.de/en/future-check) analyzes
your language requirements. From 2,500 EUR plus VAT,
creditable toward the follow-up project.

**From arocom projects:**

- Aqua Römer sells mineral water regionally and needs a site that stays visible in local search. We set up Drupal 10 with schema markup, clean redirects, and a newsletter loop; the brand stays in the local top results without requiring constant marketing intervention.
- We've migrated [Aventerra](https://www.arocom.de/en/references/aventerra) step by step from Drupal 6 to Drupal 11 since 2012, 5 major versions across more than a decade, without the platform ever being offline for more than a day.

### How many languages does Drupal support?

Technically, there is no limit. Drupal supports any language that can be defined as a locale. Projects with 20, 30, or more languages are possible and proven in practice.

### Can you translate only parts of a website?

Yes. Not every piece of content needs to exist in every language. Drupal only shows the languages for which a translation exists. Fallback rules define what happens when no translation is available.

### Is Drupal better for multilingual support than WordPress?

Yes. WordPress needs plugins like WPML or Polylang for multilingual support. Drupal solves this natively in the core. With 5+ languages and complex translation workflows, Drupal is the more reliable choice.
