Gin Theme: The Best Drupal Backend for Editors

Last updated: March 2026 · Reading time: 7 minutes

Your website looks great — but the backend feels clunky and outdated? Many CMS shine in the frontend and make things unnecessarily difficult for editors in the backend. The Gin Theme for Drupal changes that: fresh design, better usability, and a workflow that is faster and clearer.

What Gin Does Better Than Standard Themes

Sticky toolbar. Buttons like Save, Preview, and publication status remain visible even in long forms. No more scrolling to save a change.

Modern media management. The media library shows large preview images, offers search functionality, and drag-and-drop upload. Existing files are easy to find.

Dark mode. Three modes are available: Light, Dark, and Automatic (based on operating system settings). This is easier on the eyes during long work sessions.

Customizable accent and focus colors. The accent color controls visual priority in the UI — primary buttons, links, active tabs. The focus color shows the current focus during keyboard navigation. Both are individually configurable.

Flexible layout density. Table row height can be adjusted in three levels: Standard (62px), Compact (52px), and Narrow (47px). This improves overview in large content lists.

Configuration and Customization

Navigation options. Gin offers three arrangements for the admin toolbar — depending on preference and workflow. Additionally, a secondary toolbar for extended frontend functions can be activated.

Toggle form hints. Help texts for content fields can be shown or hidden with a click. Experienced editors work without distraction, new editors see the help.

User customizations. Administrators can enable individual settings for users. Each editor can set dark mode, accent color, and layout density according to their own preferences.

Drupal compatibility. Gin is developed in major versions. For Drupal 10.3+, Gin 3.x is the common base; with Drupal 11, a newer Gin version may be required depending on the minor version. arocom ensures that theme and core work together cleanly.
