Why Drupal? The CMS for Enterprise Platforms
The question "Which CMS?" sounds technical. In reality, it is strategic. Your platform determines how quickly you publish content, how secure your data is, whether you can scale to 14 languages — and whether AI systems understand and cite your content.
65% of all search queries end without a click (Bain/Dynata, BrightEdge, 2025-2026). To stay visible in this world, you need a platform that serves machines AND humans. Drupal can do that. But Drupal is not always the answer.
This page explains what sets Drupal apart from other CMS, when it is the right choice, when it is not — and why arocom has been committed to Drupal since 2012.
What Drupal is — and what it is not
Drupal is an open-source content management system that has existed since 2001. It is developed in PHP and maintained by a global community of thousands of developers. The current version is Drupal 11.
Drupal is not a website builder. There are no drag-and-drop templates that produce a finished site in five minutes. Drupal is a framework for digital platforms: websites, portals, intranets, shops, multilingual presences, complex editorial systems for publishing organizations.
This makes Drupal more demanding than WordPress or Wix — and at the same time more powerful as soon as requirements go beyond a simple corporate website.
The 6 strengths of Drupal
Not every CMS does everything equally well. Drupal has clear strengths — and they lie where requirements become complex.
Drupal in comparison: not all CMS are created equal
There is no objectively best CMS. There is the right CMS for your requirements. Here is an honest assessment.
Drupal vs. WordPress
WordPress powers over 40% of all websites worldwide — rightly so. For blogs, small corporate sites, and quick projects, WordPress is a good choice. The limit lies in complexity: multilingual support, granular access rights, complex content models, and enterprise security are possible in WordPress, but only through extensive plugin stacks that create maintenance overhead and security risks.
Drupal solves these requirements at its core. No plugin stack, but architecture.
Drupal vs. TYPO3
TYPO3 is widespread in the German-speaking market and a solid enterprise CMS. The differences: Drupal has a larger global community, a more extensive module ecosystem, and stronger API capabilities. TYPO3 is more established in Germany but has less reach internationally. For organizations with international ambitions, Drupal offers more flexibility.
Drupal vs. Proprietary Systems (Adobe, Sitecore, Contentful)
Proprietary DXPs offer integrated marketing suites — at a corresponding price. License costs of 100,000 EUR per year and more are not uncommon. Drupal delivers comparable functionality without license costs. The investment goes into development instead of licenses — and then belongs to you, not the vendor.
Drupal vs. AI Website Builders
AI builders like Lovable (valued at $6.6 billion, NxCode, 2026) generate functional websites in minutes. For prototypes and simple projects, that is impressive. For platforms with editorial teams, rights management, multilingual support, and interfaces to ERP, CRM, or PIM, these tools lack the architectural depth.
When Drupal is the right choice
Drupal fits when ...
- Your platform needs to serve multiple languages and regions
- Multiple editors work with different permissions
- Complex content models are needed (not just pages and blog posts)
- Interfaces to external systems are required (ERP, CRM, PIM)
- Security and data privacy are non-negotiable
- Accessibility per BITV 2.0 / WCAG must be met
- You want a platform that lasts 5-10 years
Typical Drupal projects
- Corporate websites with 500+ pages and multiple languages
- Intranet and extranet solutions
- Specialized portals and industry platforms
- NGO platforms with complex structures
- Web applications with custom business logic
- Platforms for the AI era: structured data, schema markup, GEO readiness
When Drupal is NOT the right choice — diagnosis before therapy
We believe in the principle: diagnosis before therapy. That also means being honest about when Drupal is not the best choice.
Drupal is not the best choice when ...
- You need a simple website with 5-15 pages — WordPress or a builder will do
- The budget is below 15,000 EUR and requirements are simple
- You have no technical partner for maintenance and updates
- You are looking for a pure e-commerce solution — Shopify or WooCommerce are often better
- Speed beats sustainability — if you need to go live in 2 weeks
What we do in that case
We tell you. No sales pitch that pushes you into a system that does not fit. If WordPress, TYPO3, or another system better matches your requirements, we recommend that. That is exactly what the Platform Check (Audit) is for: an independent analysis that clarifies what you really need — before you invest.
arocom and Drupal — since 2012
Since 2012, arocom has worked exclusively with Drupal. Over 160 projects — from an NGO with 11,000 employees (CJD) to an international architecture firm (HENN), from specialized portals (haustec.de) to custom web applications (d&b audiotechnik, Fohhn).
arocom is not just a user but part of the Drupal community: own contrib modules, sponsor of international Drupal events, host of coworking days. This is not marketing — it is a mindset. Open source means: giving back, not just taking.
As part of the Schoene Toechter group, arocom works in a co-pitch model with design agencies like 21TORR. arocom delivers the technology, the partner agency delivers the design. On equal footing, not as a subcontractor.
What others say about working with us
If Drupal, then arocom! That sums up our experience from 6 years of collaboration with Axel Roth and his team. Highest competence and absolutely reliable work go hand in hand here, all in a very pleasant atmosphere!
We thank you for your reliable and well-structured work. We would like to particularly highlight your patience and professional demeanor. Your feedback and assessments were of extraordinary value for the further decisions in the Leando project. We can make an unreserved recommendation for arocom GmbH, and we are happy to do so publicly.
We have been working very closely with arocom for more than two years and have had many good experiences.
In time. In budget. In quality.
This is not a slogan. It is the promise that arocom has been delivering on since 2012. Standards-compliant implementations, defined processes, transparent effort estimates. Drupal projects rarely fail because of technology — they fail because of poor architecture and lack of communication. Both are things we take seriously.
Is Drupal free?
Yes. Drupal is open source and license-free. Costs arise for development, hosting, and maintenance — not for the software itself. Compared to proprietary systems like Adobe Experience Manager or Sitecore, you save license costs often exceeding 100,000 EUR per year.
Why is Drupal more expensive than WordPress in development?
Drupal projects cost more in initial development because Drupal is built for more complex requirements. The investment pays off over the platform's lifetime: fewer plugin conflicts, more stable security, native multilingual support, and lower maintenance costs. For simple projects, WordPress is often the better choice — we tell you that honestly.
Is Drupal secure?
Drupal has one of the best security concepts of any CMS. A dedicated security team proactively reviews and coordinates patches. The architecture cleanly separates presentation and logic. Governments worldwide use Drupal — also for this reason.
Can I manage Drupal myself?
Content management: yes. Drupal offers an editorial system that editors can use without programming skills — and with professional training, your team becomes fully self-sufficient for day-to-day content work. Technical maintenance (updates, security patches, module management) should be handled by an experienced partner. arocom offers service contracts for this.
How long does a Drupal project take?
Depending on scope, between 2 and 9 months. arocom estimates a corporate website with multilingual support and integrations at 3-6 months. Complex platforms with custom business logic take longer. Every project begins with a clear effort estimate.
How much does a Drupal website cost?
Serious Drupal projects start at approximately 25,000 EUR. Complex platforms range between 50,000 and 200,000 EUR. If you want clarity upfront, start with the Platform Check (from 2,500 EUR plus VAT, credited toward the follow-up project).
Drupal 7, 8, 9 — do I need to upgrade?
Drupal 7 has reached end of life. Drupal 8 and 9 no longer receive security updates. If you are still on one of these versions, an upgrade to Drupal 11 is necessary — not optional. arocom has documented and guided the upgrade path for all versions.
What makes arocom different from other Drupal agencies?
Exclusively Drupal since 2012. Over 160 Drupal projects. Own contrib modules, active in the community. And one principle: diagnosis before therapy. We start with understanding, not with a proposal. Co-pitch model with design agencies, transparent processes, response time under 4 hours on business days.
Can Drupal work with AI systems?
Yes. Drupal produces structured data and semantic HTML — the foundation for AI systems to understand and cite content. arocom integrates AI features directly into Drupal platforms: from automated content optimization to AI-powered recommendations.
Is Drupal accessible?
Accessibility has been a core principle since Drupal 8. ARIA labels, keyboard navigation, and semantic HTML are standard. For full compliance with BITV 2.0 and WCAG, additional configuration and testing is needed — arocom has implemented this for projects like CJD.
Is Drupal right for your project?
Every project at arocom starts with a conversation. No form disappears into a ticket system — your inquiry is read and answered personally.
