Drupal Multisite enables managing multiple websites from a single installation. Updates, security patches, and modules apply to all sites simultaneously. This saves maintenance effort — but introduces dependencies. arocom has implemented multisite projects for organizations with multiple brands, country subsidiaries, and branches since 2012 and knows the limit beyond which separate installations are the better choice.

Drupal Multisite: One Installation, Many Websites — When It Is Worthwhile

Last updated: March 2026 · Reading time: 7 minutes

Your company operates multiple brands, country subsidiaries, or branches — and each needs its own website. Separate installations mean: multiple maintenance efforts, multiple updates, multiple security risks. Multisite promises the solution. But is it the right one?

When Drupal Multisite Is the Right Decision

Multisite is worthwhile when your websites are structurally similar: same design system, same modules, same content types — but different content and domains.

Multiple brands under one roof. A corporation with different product worlds that are technically identically structured but need their own content and domains.

Country subsidiaries. International organizations with regional websites that use the same design and the same functionality but display localized content.

Branch networks. Companies with location websites that manage opening hours, offers, and team information per branch — on a shared foundation.

The biggest advantage: one update, one security patch, one module update — and all websites are on the latest version.

When Separate Installations Are the Better Choice

Multisite has dependencies that you need to be aware of:

Different requirements. If one website needs an online shop and another an intranet, multisite forces compromises. Modules that only one site needs still have to be installed for all.

Different release cycles. If one site needs to deploy quickly and another needs more stable cycles, multisite slows things down. One update affects all sites simultaneously.

Security risk. If an attacker gains access to the installation, all sites are affected. With separate installations, the damage remains limited.

Scaling. Beyond a certain number of sites, the shared installation becomes a bottleneck. Separate installations with a shared codebase (e.g., via Composer) then offer more flexibility.

arocom recommends: first check whether your websites are truly structurally identical. If so, multisite is an efficiency gain. If not, save yourself the dependencies.

How arocom Implements Multisite Projects

arocom guides multisite projects from the architecture decision to ongoing operations. This includes:

Central codebase with shared modules and themes. Separate databases per site for clean data separation. Single sign-on for editors managing multiple sites. Central user management with granular permissions per site. Hosting and maintenance from a single source.

Since 2012, we have built multisite solutions for organizations with different requirements — and learned when the decision against multisite is the right one.

Do multisite websites share the database?

In the recommended configuration, each site has its own database. This ensures clean data separation and simplifies backups and migrations.

Can multisite websites look different?

Yes. Each site can use its own subtheme that builds on a shared base theme. Colors, fonts, and layouts can be customized per site.

What does a Drupal Multisite cost?

The initial setup of a multisite is higher than a single installation because the architecture is more complex. Ongoing costs are lower because updates and maintenance only need to happen once. Exact costs depend on the number of sites and requirements.

Can WordPress also do multisite?

Yes, WordPress has a multisite feature. For simple scenarios, this works. For complex requirements with multilingual support, granular permissions, and interfaces, Drupal Multisite is the more capable solution.
