AI Overviews: How AI Systems Cite Your Content

What Are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google has been displaying directly above traditional search results since 2024. Google's AI reads multiple sources, synthesizes an answer, and links to the sources used.

This fundamentally changes search behavior. Users get an answer without visiting a website. The CTR decline for organic results on queries with AI Overviews is -61% (Seer Interactive, Sep 2025).

But AI Overviews are not the only AI search system. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other platforms generate answers with source citations. The mechanism is similar: structured, unambiguous content is preferentially cited.

How AI Systems Select Sources

AI systems do not cite randomly. They prefer sources that meet three criteria:
