The title tag is the most important on-page ranking factor. It appears as the clickable title in search results and in the browser tab. The optimal length is 55-60 characters. The main keyword belongs at the beginning, the brand name at the end. Since 2012, arocom has optimized title tags for Drupal platforms — systematically across all pages, not as individual measures.

Optimizing Title Tags: The Most Important SEO Lever

Last updated: March 2026 · Reading time: 6 minutes

The title tag sits in the HTML head and is the first thing searchers see of your page in Google results. It directly influences which keywords Google indexes your page for and whether someone clicks your result.

No other on-page factor has this dual lever: ranking and click rate simultaneously. Yet most websites have identical title tags, truncated titles, or generic phrases like "Home | Company Name."

The 7 Rules for Optimal Title Tags

1. 55-60 characters. Google truncates longer titles (approx. 570px width). The key message must come before that.

2. Main keyword at the beginning. Search engines weight words at the beginning of the title more heavily. Searchers scan from left to right.

3. Brand name at the end. The format "Keyword — Brand Name" has become standard because it fulfills both functions: relevance for Google and recognition for searchers.

4. Every page a unique title. Duplicate title tags signal Google that pages are interchangeable. This harms indexing.

5. Click-driving formulation. The title competes with 9 other results for the click. Numbers, clear value propositions, and specific terms increase CTR.

6. No keyword repetition. "SEO Agency Stuttgart | SEO Stuttgart | Agency SEO" is treated by Google as a spam signal.

7. Not all uppercase. All-caps titles appear unprofessional and get clicked less often.

Title Tags in the GEO Context

AI systems use the title tag as a first signal to classify a page's content. A precisely worded title with concrete entities (numbers, product names, year) increases the probability of your page being cited as a source.

For Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): the title tag should make the same statement as the page's executive summary — brief, definitive, with brand name.

Configuring Title Tags in Drupal

In Drupal, you control title tags via the Metatag module. It allows token-based templates per content type: "[node:title] | [site:name]" as fallback, with manual override per page for important landing pages.

arocom configures this by default in every project — including validation against duplicate titles and length check. In GEO optimization, we review all title tags systematically and optimize them for keyword coverage, length, and click rate.

Have Your Title Tags Reviewed

Enter "site:yourdomain.com" in Google and critically review every title. Or have arocom do it systematically — as part of GEO optimization or the Future Check.

Is the title tag a ranking factor?

Yes. The title tag is one of the strongest on-page ranking factors. Google uses it to assess a page's relevance for specific keywords.

How long may a title tag be?

55-60 characters or approximately 570 pixels width. Longer titles are truncated in search results.

Can Google change my title tag?

Yes. Since 2021, Google generates its own titles from page content in approximately 33% of cases (Zyppy study, 2023). A well-formulated title tag reduces the probability of Google intervening.

Should I include the company name in the title tag?

Yes, but at the end. The format 'Keyword — Brand Name' is the standard. For well-known brands, the name can also be at the beginning if brand search is a relevant traffic channel.
